I’'ve seen a number of folks refering to “balance issues” I’m curious how everyone compenstaes or deals with those issues

My 73 year old Dad has had balance issues for about 8 years or so now. He at first used a cane, but as his thighs / legs / hips have weakened he was using a walker. Now and for numberous years he hasn’t been able to stand from sitting position, so he uses a electric stand up recliner in order to be able to stand. If he falls they have to call in fire / paramedic to help him up. He barely can make it down the hall from living room to bedroom at this point.

I myself am 48 and so far don’t have balance issues.

I was just diagnosed and one of my main symptoms was lose of balance. I have weakening of my thighs and calves and upper arms.

The way that I combat it now is to use a cane. I also have installed some handrails in the bath area. My Father had the same issues as myself and used a cane around the home and wheelchair when he went out. Hope this helps… Kay

I just had annual exam at Muscular Dystrophy Clinic. I have balance issuses that are getting worse

Thankfully, I have fallen on things that are relatively soft. However, your medical provider, movement disorder specialist can work with you and your insurance to get a four wheeled walker. I have one. It is great for storage, being stable on your legs, have a place to sit when you are tired. I would recommend it to anyone with balance issues, and having to make treks over distance. I find the hardest part of using in the house, is that it is a small home, and my children love to leave clutter about the home.

No falls yet, but balance is a huge issue. I do daily heel-to-toe walking drills and kneeling with arms crossed over chest and eyes closed. Tricky. To be released from PT, I had to stand on one leg on a BOSU ball and play catch with a 4 lb medicine ball with my therapist. I have evolved to the skill-set of a trained sea lion. I am ready to audition for the Chinese circus.
Unless someone bumps into me at the grocery store - then all bets are off.

Hey Longave! You answered on an old thread and I’m glad that you did! I know balance can be a biggie for people with OPMD, but to describe it in the humorous vein that you did is a skill you have perfected!

It’ll be interesting to hear what others have to say on the topic.
